1/4 wave vhf car radio aerial placement

Post

We've just installed hytera vhf radios in a Toyota FJ Cruiser and a LR 110 SW.

The Cruiser has the 1/4 wave aerial mounted just in front of the windscreen on the left side of the car. The range is very good and very clear.

The challenge is on the LR. We've mounted the same aerial on the roof rack, front left corner. It seems a bit directional and the transmission is less than 20km (12miles).

How do we create a better ground plane for the aerial on the LR?

Or is there a better aerial placement that is recommended? (don't want to drill a hole in the roof though and remembering that there is a full length roof rack and a roof tent on top). Using the 152/160/161mhz frequencies.

Advice would be valued.

Have you tried a magnetic mount base which usually achieves a good capacitive link to the car body?

First thing is sound to me like you are using simplex which give you less coverage .   and you can also used an amplifer to boost the range also how high the base ant is and use a ant which has gain.portable to distance will be short unless you use a repeater system

The Landrover 110 has aluminium alloy body panels so a mag mount is a no go unless you place another magnet on the inside of the panels.
